A small circle or point moves along a fixed path in a circle graphic. The path on which the point moves appears to be clearly curved. But if we hide the circle graphic, we see that the point does not follow a curved path, but rather a square. If we now show the circle graphic again, suddenly even the straight lines of the square are bent.
This effect is quite well known and is called the Orbison illusion. It is a well-known optical illusion. The fact that the path on which a point moves in front of the circle graphic also curves, even if the square cannot be seen, is probably new to most viewers. The effect even seems to be getting stronger. The so-called Kinetic Orbison Illusion was only discovered in 2023 by Matsunaga, Itro & Kanematsu.
But we can do something about the curvature. Can you see it? Now the point seems to be moving. But does he really do that? If we hide the circle graphic again, it becomes clear that the ball does not move in straight lines, but in curved ones.
If you are expecting an explanation of the phenomenon, you will unfortunately be disappointed. Although there are several possible explanations, the phenomenon of deception has not been scientifically researched.
