New official video shows gameplay, but I really miss 3 features

Naughty Dog has released a new The Last of Us Part 1 video that shows us more gameplay.

In the past few days, more gameplay excerpts and supposed information about The Last of Us Part 1 have come to light through leaks. Now Sony and Naughty Dog have released a new official video of around 10 minutes in which we can see the gameplay and get more information. So far, I’ve been looking in vain for three gameplay features that made The Last of Us Part 2 so great for me in the PS5 reboot.

But first things first, what was shown? Here you can see the new video:

The Last of Us Part 1 – New trailer shows gameplay and introduces improvements

In the video above we see a number of scenes from the new edition, which once again confirm that, compared to the nine-year-old original, something has changed, especially graphically. The character models now look so detailed and lifelike that they can hold a candle to the figures from Part 2. Crisp textures and improved light and shadow effects also make the environments look much more modern and atmospheric.

How much the graphics have improved in the remakewe will show you in more detail in this GamePro article.

What features are new? The video confirms, among other things, that The Last of Us Part 1, like Part 2, uses a technology called “Motion Matching”, which is intended to make animations more dynamic and fluid. So instead of just playing pre-made animations that are applied depending on the context of a game situation, the remake crafts its own animations depending on what is needed in a certain game situation.

Also confirmed:

  • Permadeath mode (if we die, we have to start over)
  • Speedrun mode with adjustable timer
  • many new unlockable costumes for Joel and Ellie
  • a Model Viewer mode that lets us take a closer look at character and enemy models
  • 60+ accessibility features including audio description
  • Workbench animations from The Last of Us Part 2
  • improved enemy AI

Technical improvements (via PS Blog):

  • native 4K at 30 FPS
  • dynamic 4k at 60 FPS
  • 3D audio
  • DualSense features, haptic feedback and adaptive triggers (e.g. when we draw the bow, we feel resistance in the triggers)

And what has changed in terms of gameplay?

From a purely playful point of view, little seems to have changed compared to the original and we can expect – at least judging by the new video – basically the same gameplay.

Jump, crawl and dodgei.e. the three major new features that made sneaking and fighting in The Last of Us Part 2 so dynamic and intense in the first place, the remake apparently does not take over.

The Last of Us Part 2 was gameplay-wise superior to the original released in 2013 in almost every respect. Just three gameplay features, i.e. dodging, crawling, jumping, make the gameplay in the sequel wonderfully dynamic and every stealth and action passage exciting and intense. There are also many new weapons such as explosive arrows or the crossbow, which give me even more options to finish off my opponents.

Of course, 19-year-old Ellie is definitely more agile than her foster father, who is already well over 40 in the first TloU. The playful differences result from the age difference of the main characters alone. I’m still a little disappointed with the gameplay of the new edition shown so far. Okay, I understand that Joel is too old to have the responsiveness for lightning-fast dodges. But at least I would have been happy about a crawling function or even new playful tricks.

Graphically, the PS5 remake looks fantastic, of course, and the numerous accessibility features are also commendable. And the fantastic story, yes, it’s in the foreground of the game anyway and makes me think and cry even after the tenth run through of the original. So I’m still looking forward to Part 1, but I have to accept that I shouldn’t expect any gameplay á la Part 1 or at least well-known new mechanics.
