New mobilization against “groups” in college and for public schools

The rumble continues. Several unions including the Snes-FSU, the majority organization in middle and high schools, are calling for a new day of strike and demonstrations this Tuesday to demand the abandonment of level groups in middle schools, but also to ask for more resources in favor of of public school.

The disruptions should mainly affect the second degree with this call for mobilization launched by the Snes-FSU, with the SNEP-FSU (physical and sports education), SUD Education, the CGT education and FNEC-FP FO. In the sights of the unions: the reform launched by Gabriel Attal called the “shock of knowledge”, supposed to raise the level of French students. One of its flagship measures, the establishment of “level groups”, is accused by a very large part of the educational community of organizing the “sorting of students”, according to the inter-union press release.

“Salary increase without compensation”

Demonstrations are organized in many cities in France. In Paris, the demonstration will start near the Luxembourg Gardens around 2 p.m. In addition to the withdrawal of the “shock of knowledge” reform, the unions are asking the government for “a salary increase without compensation and resources for public schools”.

“For months, staff have been mobilizing against level groups. Strike on February 1 and 6, local actions, vote against ”the shock of knowledge” in CSE (Higher Education Council), public meetings with parents of students, dead college operation… Our organizations will support all renewals where possible,” assure the unions.

In the Paris region, the evolution of the mobilization will be carefully scrutinized among the teaching staff of Seine-Saint-Denis, who are very angry against the creation of these “level groups” and who are demanding “an emergency plan” for the education in this disadvantaged department. Friday, the Minister of National Education Nicole Belloubet received nine of the twelve deputies from Seine-Saint-Denis at their request.
