The Chinese car manufacturer MG is more than serious about expanding its product portfolio in Europe. Next, the MG 4 Electric will attack compact models like the VW ID 3, a Cupra Born or the upcoming Opel Astra-e.

The 4.29 meter long MG4 is optionally equipped with a flat-bottom battery that is just eleven centimeters high and has a capacity of 51 or 64 kWh, which should enable a range of 350 to 450 kilometers without recharging. Inside there is plenty of room for up to five passengers and a balanced weight distribution of 50:50 thanks to the flat battery pack in the underbody and the rear-wheel drive. In the medium term, however, the 125 kW / 170 hp and 150 kW / 204 hp rear-wheel drive will not remain the same, and the MG4 will have additional performance levels and an optional all-wheel drive, which is reserved for most competitors. The MG4 Electric accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds and has a governed top speed of 160 km/h.

The MG4 Electric, which costs at least 28,420 euros and is currently around 10,000 euros cheaper than the 204 hp basic VW ID-3, is the first MG model for the European market to be based on the MSP platform developed by the parent company SAIC. Their scalable structure is suitable for wheelbases from 2.65 to 3.10 meters, which allows for various body structures from a hatchback version to a sedan and a crossover. The loading volume of the MG4 Electric, whose wheelbase is 2.71 meters, is between 350 and 1,165 liters. Inside there is room for four to five people, while the driver looks at seven-inch digital instruments and a 10.25-inch central display.

“The MG4 Electric is another milestone in the long history of MG Motor,” said Xinyu Liu, CEO of MG Motor Europe. “It offers a smart alternative for customers who want more. As the first vehicle based on our technologically sophisticated and extremely flexible MSP platform, it combines impressive electrical performance, excellent handling and innovative assistance systems with ease of use and an exceptionally dynamic design fitted; However, it can be upgraded to 800 volt technology for higher charging speeds for subsequent model generations. The MG4 has a range of 350 kilometers in its basic configuration. The AC charging power is 6.6 kilowatts, with fast charging up to 117 kilowatts, the 51 kW battery pack can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in 40 minutes. The models with more power and the larger battery pack have a maximum charging capacity of 135 kW.

MG Motor intends to continue its growth course after the launch of the MG4 Electric, especially in Europe. “The launch of the new MG4 Electric is our most important step to date. And there is more to come,” says Xinyu Liu, “MG Motor aims to develop intelligent mobility solutions with affordable yet well-equipped and high-quality cars that offer a great driving experience. By 2025, we will expand the brand’s portfolio to ten models to meet customer needs in different segments, from microcars to sports cars.”
