New jazz album by Joshua Redman – Culture

It takes a moment to get used to the fact that the otherwise groundbreaking saxophonist Joshua Redman plays the kind of jazz on his new album that serves as a signal for cultivated city life in Hollywood films. That means elegance, restrained virtuosity and the “Great American Songbook”. However, Redman, with his quartet, a few guests and the singer Gabrielle Cavassa, takes this elegance to a level where it is no longer about complacency, but rather about a purity of form that, via the detour of such standards, once again turns jazz into American classicism explained. Keith Jarrett has been doing this with his Standards Trio for many years.
