New government alliance: Berlin’s CDU votes unanimously for coalition with SPD

The way for black and red in Berlin is clear. A day after the SPD, the CDU also voted in favor of the planned alliance on Monday – albeit much more clearly than the Social Democrats. The senators are already known.

One day after the SPD, the Berlin CDU also approved the joint coalition agreement. All 275 delegates present voted for the black-red alliance at a state party conference in Berlin. There were no votes against and no abstentions. The day before, only 54.3 percent of the SPD members who had taken part in the corresponding member vote had spoken out in favor of this alliance.

Both parties want to provide information on the allocation of departments on Monday. The coalition agreement is to be signed on Wednesday, and CDU state chairman Kai Wegner is to be elected the first governing mayor of his party since 2001 in the House of Representatives on Thursday.

CDU state chief Kai Wegner had previously explained to around 300 delegates that it was his aim to regain the confidence of Berliners in politics. Wegner thanked the SPD leadership for the trusting coalition talks. The approval of the SPD base for the black-red coalition is a sign of reason. And he added combatively: “We’ve almost made it, Red-Green-Red has been voted out and Berlin is getting a new, better government.”

The staff for the Senate, which is provided by the CDU, should also be nominated at the party conference. CDU general secretary is planned Stephen Evers as finance senator and vice party leader Manya Schreiner for the Mobility and Environment Department. The education department intended with the previous deputies Katharina Günther-Wünsch be occupied. As Culture Senator is the music manager Joe Chialo planned, who is also a member of the CDU national board. Günther-Wünsch and Chialo had already been presented by Wegner as part of a possible Senate team during the election campaign.

The greatest surprise in terms of personnel is the occupation for Department of Justice: Here CDU leader Wegner presented the deputy head of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Felix Badenberg. The non-party lawyer has Iranian roots and recently stood out as a committed fighter against right-wing extremism in her office.

In addition, Wegner announced at the party conference that the previous construction policy spokesman for the CDU parliamentary group, Dirk Stettner, become the new faction leader in the House of Representatives. So far, Wegner has been the group leader himself.

The Senate personal details of the SPD are also known to the rbb before the official announcement on Monday evening: the previous governing SPD mayor Franziska Giffeywhich had long been traded for the construction department, according to rbb information from party sources Economics Senator. She takes over from non-party Stephan Schwarz, who announced last week that he was retiring from politics.

In administration for Building, housing and urban development increases Christian Gaebler to the senator. The 58-year-old was previously Secretary of State there. Changes from the SPD parliamentary group Cansel Kiziltepe to the department for Integration, work and social affairsthat around the areas diversity and anti-discrimination is added. The department for Science, health, care and equality should go to the longstanding member of the Berlin state parliament and science expert Ina Czyborra go.

As the only one of the previous SPD senators remains Iris Spranger in office and also leads for the remainder of the legislative period Interior and Sports Administration.
