Gérard Depardieu: “This role suits me perfectly”

Actor Gérard Depardieu (74) sees the role of Gabriel in the new film “The Taste of Small Things” as his spitting image. “This character is so close to me that I don’t have to try very hard to play him because Gabriel and I are almost the same person,” Depardieu, now a Russian citizen, told the German Press Agency at yesterday’s film premiere in Berlin.

In the French tragic comedy, the actor, as France’s most famous chef, goes to Japan in search of the taste that has haunted him since his youth. He feels very comfortable in the role, said the actor.

In the cinema he addressed a few words to the audience in English. “I’m happy to be here,” said the French-born. Despite his sympathy for the country, he couldn’t imagine life in Japan – quite the opposite in Berlin. “I love Berlin and admire the city for its history and its music.”
