The city of Jičín, located in northeastern Bohemia not far from the Elbe, is still not a metropolis today. At one corner of the huge market square, far too big for the place, stands an inconspicuous two-story building, painted in the warm, dark Schönbrunn yellow of the Habsburg Empire, and a memorial plaque proclaims in two languages, Czech and German, that it was here on April 28, 1874 150 years ago, Karl Kraus was born. His father owned a paper bag factory here, and to this day there is a stationery store in the basement.
