New federal government: Heads of the Greens appoint state secretaries

The designated ministers of the Greens in the federal government have announced their state ministers and parliamentary state secretaries. There was a surprise.

After the ministers, the Greens have also named the ranks of their state secretaries for the future traffic light government. Party co-leader Robert Habeck brings Europe expert Franziska Brantner, Greens federal manager Michael Kellner and climate expert Oliver Krischer as parliamentary state secretaries to the new Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate, as a Greens spokeswoman confirmed.

Habeck’s decision for Brantner is considered a surprise, because the 42-year-old was originally traded for the post in the department of foreign minister-designate Annalena Baerbock. She is now bringing defense expert Tobias Lindner and parliamentarians Katja Keul and Anna Lührmann into her house as ministers of state.

State ministers and parliamentary state secretaries must belong to the Bundestag, support the ministers in their political tasks and can also act as their deputies, for example in the Bundestag or at political events. They take care of contacts with the parliamentary groups and the Federal Council, but also – especially in the case of the Federal Foreign Office – abroad.

In the future, a total of five ministries will be headed by Green politicians. In the future, Ophelia Nick and Manuela Rottmann will act as Parliamentary State Secretaries in the Ministry of Food and Agriculture. Ekin Deligöz and Sven Lehmann take up these positions in the Family, Seniors, Women and Youth department, and Bettina Hoffmann and Chris Kühn in the Ministry for the Environment and Consumer Protection.
