Nine sheep were killed in two attacks on a meadow in the Upper Palatinate. Gene tests showed that the first incident was caused by a wolf, the State Office for the Environment (LfU) announced on Wednesday. The analysis of the second incident is not yet complete.
The sheep would have been on a photovoltaic system area in the district of Neustadt an der Waldnaab. This was not protected by a wolf-repellent fence. Site-loyal wolves live in the area of the Manteler Forest. The LfU recommends livestock farmers to fence their pastures accordingly and refers to the state subsidy of up to 100 percent of the costs for livestock protection measures. Compensation payments can be requested for killed animals.
