The king wanted to live here alone, but this wish was denied him. Ludwig II, the last great monarch of Bavaria, died a mysterious death on Lake Starnberg in June 1886 at a time when Neuschwanstein was unfinished. Even if that never changed, the castle in southern Germany attracted around 700,000 tourists last year. Before the pandemic, there were 1.4 million at peak times. In the summer months, around 6,000 people walked through the rooms in the castle every day. That leaves traces.
