Neubiberg – Comfortable retreat with big city flair – District of Munich

Velvet chairs, dark wooden tables, wallpaper with banana plants: Whoever steps through the door of Café Röstoff at Hauptstraße 7 in Neubiberg, immerses themselves in a cosy, hip oasis in which one immediately feels comfortable and which also exudes some big city flair. It smells like coffee, soft jazz music is playing in the background, and cars rush by outside. This morning at 10 a.m., a few guests are sitting at the tables. Owner Karin Ulamec is preparing grilled puccia, a type of Italian flatbread, with “ham and cheese”, i.e. ham and cheese.

With the opening of the café in 2019, the 41-year-old, who lived in Singapore for some time and worked there as a restaurant critic, made a wish come true. “When we moved to Neubiberg, I was missing something where you could just go, have a coffee and meet people,” says the mother of three. This is how a stationery shop became a small café, in which – due to the pandemic – there is currently room for 25 guests inside and another 16 outside. Ulamec has brought impressions of many trips into her concept, and it is just as important to her to “procure as much regionally as possible”.

Only coffee from the Supremo roastery in Unterhaching is brewed here, and the gluten-free grain bread on the gray earthenware plates comes from the “echt nowecht nun” bakery in Munich. The pleasantly small menu on two pages offers a fine selection of dishes that “we all like ourselves”, as Ulamec says. For example, there are homemade mueslis, pancakes and special sandwiches. If you are looking for the classic bread roll with jam, this is not the place for you. However, the Röstoff team always tries to respond to the wishes of the guests.

You don’t have to wait long for a friendly young lady to ask you what you’d like for breakfast. The choice falls on a cappuccino that tastes pleasantly soft and not too strong and at 2.90 euros is still a reasonable price. The “Homemade Granola” with a mixture of rolled oats, different seeds and crispy quinoa, creamy Greek yoghurt and fresh strawberries, blueberries and raspberries offers a harmonious, varied taste experience. The roasted grain bread with avocado mousse and tomato salsa is also a treat, and not just visually. The mild, soft puree is a pleasant counterpart to the spicy, fruity salsa. The conclusion: It’s definitely worth coming back.

Opening times: Usually Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Arrive with the S-Bahn line 7, from the train station only a few minutes on the main road in an easterly direction. From the café it is less than five minutes in the other direction of the main street to the environmental garden.
