The prerequisite is not only that you have subscribed to the premium rate for 17.99 euros per month: the respective content must also be available with spatial audio. Spatial Audio is not a replacement for Dolby Atmos thought. This is of course also retained by Netflix as an object-based sound format. Rather, spatial audio can help to make the sound appear more spatial with stereo speakers or headphones. Incidentally, you do not have to make any special settings. With compatible content and a stereo configuration, you should automatically hear the audio accordingly. You can test that with The Witcher, The Adam Project or even the fourth season StrangerThings.
In the background, Netflix uses Ambeo 2-Channel Spatial Audio technology as a basis. So you cooperate directly with Sennheiser. Incidentally, Netflix has not only introduced spatial audio, but is also giving premium rate subscribers another improvement: You can now keep films and series on more devices for offline consumption. While this was previously possible on a maximum of four devices, it is now possible on up to six devices. This can be helpful if you commute with different devices – such as a smartphone, tablet and notebook.
When it comes to spatial audio, Netflix adds that they are very satisfied with the cooperation with Sennheiser. Subscribers do not need new hardware for improved sound. Thanks to Ambeo 2-Channel Spatial Audio, it is now possible to prepare surround mixes for stereo set-ups. This means that far more titles can be offered in this format than before.
