The streaming service will release a whopping 25 Netflix Originals from South Korea in 2022. Is the next “Squid Game” included?

After the success of “Squid Game” and “Hellbound,” Netflix will almost double its Korean content in 2022. This was announced by Kang Dong-han, vice president of content at Netflix, at a press conference on Wednesday (January 19). While there were only 15 productions in 2021, 25 Korean films and series will be released this year. This is the longest list of Netflix productions from Korea to date.

According to The Korea Herald Netflix invested over half a billion dollars in Korean content in 2021. As the money seems to have paid off, this year’s list will exceed the number of expenses. However, the company has not released an exact estimate. Netflix explained the increase in Korean content produced using numbers. “Global viewing hours of Korean originals have increased six-fold compared to last year,” Kang said. At the forefront is of course the series “Squid Game”, which became the most-watched series of all time with 95 percent of viewers outside of Korea. Key to the new strategy was that “many of these viewers were exploring other Korean content,” Kang said.

Korean highlights at a glance

The next Korean release on Netflix will be the series “All Of Us Are Dead” on January 28th. In this, a group of students are stuck in their high school when a zombie invasion descends on them. Kang is also looking forward to the crime series Juvenile Justice, which will premiere in February, and the romance film Moral Sense, which will be released around Valentine’s Day.

The “Hollywood Reporter” also introduces “All Of Us Are Dead” as a highlight. Another highlight is the series “Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area”, which is an adaptation of the Spanish hit “Heist of Money”. In addition, the film “Seoul Vibe” should stand out, which is about the adventures of special forces against the background of the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul.
