There have now been 112 deaths in the terrible fires ravaging central Chile. Temperatures are around 40 degrees, there are dozens of fires and more than 3,000 houses have already been burned.
Seen from the sky, a landscape of ashes and neighborhoods completely ravaged by flames. In the coastal town of Viña del Mar, the hills are still smoking, the fire has crossed the roads and leaves behind piles of charred cars. The residents are now trying to clear it but almost everything has gone up in smoke.
26,000 hectares burned
For four days now, firefighters have been battling dozens of fires that are devastating central and southern Chile. The fire is fanned by wind and hot temperatures. According to a latest report, at least 112 people have died. Despite more favorable conditions in recent hours, the toll could still rise. Some residents are angry and point out the lack of responsiveness of the authorities. “Honestly, they let us die here alone”, provides a resident of a district of the city. Nearly 26,000 hectares were burned. France said it was ready, this Monday, January 5, to provide aid to Chile.
