Authorities have responded after daring hikers climbed close to the crater. The trekking route remained open during the 2021 and 2022 eruptions. But now?

After a volcanic eruption Iceland, onlookers have climbed into the immediate vicinity of the crater. The authorities have now temporarily closed the place near Reykjavik to the public. As the national civil protection authority announced on Thursday, the hiking route to the bubbling lava was blocked by the police until at least Saturday. This is to ensure the safety of tourists and emergency services.

A spokeswoman for the authority told the Icelandic broadcaster RÚV that the smoke was still heavy and people had become ill. In addition, the behavior of people on the way to the lava flows was “not exemplary”. Around 100 people were at the top of the crater. Photos showed how two men climbed straight up to the newly created crater, even though the glowing hot lava was spurting out of the earth’s interior.

The volcanic eruption began on Monday near Litli-Hrútur Mountain on the Reykjanes Peninsula southwest of the capital Reykjavik. It is the third in the region in two and a half years. As after the eruptions in 2021 and 2022, the authorities initially opened the volcanic area to volcano enthusiasts and hikers, but issued warnings about the dangers.
