Dead after tornado in Guangzhou, southern China

A tornado in Guangzhou killed at least five people. More than 140 factory buildings collapsed. It was the second storm in the southern Chinese metropolis within a week.

Five people died in a tornado in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou on Saturday. As the Xinhua news agency reported, another 33 people were injured in the storm.

According to official information, the storm damaged 141 factory buildings, but no residential buildings collapsed. As Xinhua reported, the rescue work is said to have been largely completed.

Second storm within a week

Just a week ago, Guangzhou and surrounding Guangdong province were hit by torrential rain, killing at least four people and forcing more than 100,000 residents to flee to safety. According to authorities, more than 40 rivers and over 60 measuring stations in the province recorded rainfall amounts that were above the alarm values.

Around 18 million people live in Guangzhou. The provincial capital is one of the most important economic centers in the People’s Republic.
