A new streaming service is launching this week. The US space agency Nasa wants to offer free access to live streams, documentaries and reports about space.

As part of a fundamental overhaul of its in-house website, the US space agency Nasa is launching its new one on November 8th Streaming service NASA Plus. Unlike most portals, such as Netflix or Amazon Prime Video, NASA’s offer will be free and will not contain any advertising. Not even an account is required. The announcement in the summer was recently followed by a short trailer with the exact date.

But there will be no licensed goods or Hollywood blockbusters. NASA would like to use the platform for its own content, such as live streams of rocket launches or numerous video series and documentaries. When Nasa Plus launches, completely new content will also be available that was not previously available in the Nasa archives.

NASA Plus: Content also suitable for children

The space agency describes the portal as family-friendly, so there will also be animated series. New episodes are planned weekly for new content.

Nasa Plus doesn’t just offer current content. Viewers should also be able to gain insights into past missions and obtain comprehensive information about the work of the astronauts.

“With NASA’s new streaming platform, we are bringing space on demand and to your fingertips,” said Marc Etkind, a NASA spokesman. “Redesigning our digital presence will help us tell the stories of how NASA explores the unknown in air and space, inspires through discovery, and innovates for the benefit of humanity.”

Accessible via many well-known platforms

NASA says the streaming service will be available on most popular platforms. The content will be available for iOS and Android via the NASA app, and the offer will also be available on the Roku player, Apple TV and Fire TV. The authority also mentions possible access via common browsers. Smart TV systems are not explicitly mentioned.

The free Nasa Plus offering is intended to help share information about exoplanet exploration with the world and create a better understanding of Earth’s climate and the sun’s influence on Earth, said Nicky Fox from Nasa’s Science Mission Directorate.
