Name confusion: Should the AirPods Pro actually be called AirPods Extreme?

Apple’s AirPods Pro had a different name internally – and there was also a lot of experimentation with the Dynamic Island. Both anecdotes from the iPhone manufacturer’s recent past have now been reported to the US website MacRumors.

With the AirPods Pro with ANC noise cancellation, which was first released in October 2019 – there is now the second generation and a USB-C version – Apple is said to have considered, according to internal information, in the meantime, the name “AirPods Extreme” to use. The term “Extreme” was last used by Apple for the AirPort wireless routers. At least one member of Apple’s leadership team advocated for the name.

But in the end, Apple decided on “Pro”, which fit better with the overall brand image, because after all, the MacBook and iPhone also have this name for the better models. However, Apple now also uses other terms such as “Max” (for the large AirPod over-ear headphones) and “Ultra” (for the second Apple Watch variant and the top SoC models in the Mac). An “iPhone Ultra” is still expected – it was already set for last year.

When it comes to Dynamic Island, MacRumors also serves up fresh stories. Before the data information island that covers the camera holes on the display was first introduced in 2022 with the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, Apple therefore experimented with different looks. The entire area should supposedly be moved more to the right or completely to the side.

Alternatively, there was also a look in which the entire upper area would have remained black except for the time and the reception and battery information. A variant that made the “double pill” visible was also said to be conceivable. Finally, Apple also considered a “popover” menu. MacRumors shows more looks on its website. However, there is now criticism of the Dynamic Island that it is not being accepted enough by developers.
