Austrian actress Nadja Tiller has died at the age of 93. In her long career she acted in more than 120 films and series. She became internationally known in 1958 with the film “The Girl Rosemarie”. A friend of the family confirmed her death to the German Press Agency, citing relatives. First had Picture reported her death.
She spent the last years of her life in a nursing home in Hamburg. Her daughter Natascha Giller said that Picturethat her mother passed away peacefully in the presence of a nurse.
In “The Girl Rosemarie”, Tiller’s best-known film, she was seen in 1958 as the noble prostitute Rosemarie Nitribitt. At the time, Rolf Thiele’s satire on the period of the economic miracle was considered a scandalous film and attracted crowds of viewers to the cinemas. It screened at the Venice Film Festival and won a Golden Globe in the United States. The role brought Tiller’s international breakthrough: she shot with colleagues such as Jean-Paul Belmondo, Jean Gabin, Yul Brynner, Rod Steiger and Curd Jürgens.
Joint film appearances with husband Walter Giller
After numerous feature films, including with her husband Walter Giller, she increasingly worked for television and theater from the 1960s. Hamburg’s Senator for Culture, Carsten Brosda (SPD), described Tiller as the “grande dame of film”https://www.sueddeutsche.de/kultur/. “We mourn the loss of a great actress and our thoughts are with her loved ones,” he wrote on Twitter.

Born in Vienna, she and her husband lived in Lugano until 2008. After about 50 years, the two moved up north – to Hamburg, where Giller grew up. The couple lived next door to each other in a retirement home on the banks of the Elbe in Hamburg. Giller died in 2011. The couple had their last joint film appearance on screen in Leander Haussmann’s “Dinosaur” (2009).
Since her first theater engagement in 1949 at the Vienna Theater in der Josefstadt, “Miss Austria” from 1949 has worked as an actress and has appeared on stage in addition to film and television. She played her last role at the age of 87 in “My Fair Lady” at the Theater in Braunschweig.
