My friend in Gaza no longer calls: Column by Carolin Emcke – Opinion

All you can see is a circle with a hook. This is the symbol for a message that was sent but not read. If there were two circles with hooks, I would at least know that the cell phone is in use. If there were two circles with a colored background, I would know that the message was read. I watch every day. Every hour. Nothing. I’m so desperate, I don’t even expect an answer anymore. My friend from Khan Younis wouldn’t even have to read my messages. The symbol with the two circles would be enough for me, it would be enough for me if I knew she was there, somewhere, in the middle of the death in Gaza, and could turn on a cell phone. If she can’t or doesn’t want to talk, I almost don’t care anymore. What was she supposed to say? When I don’t even know what else to write to her. That I would give anything to get her out of there. If only I knew my girlfriend was alive.
