First Dylan sold the author’s rights to his songs, now also the music catalogue: The singer wants his legacy to be where it “belongs”.

The US musician Bob Dylan (80) has also sold his entire music catalog and the option for upcoming albums after the author rights to all his songs. Sony Music acquired both last July, as the company announced on Monday.

A sales amount was not mentioned, US media estimated the value of the deal at around 200 million dollars (about 180 million euros). The Nobel Prize winner for literature has been working with Sony Music’s label Columbia Records for more than 50 years. “I’m glad all my recordings can stay where they belong,” Dylan was quoted as saying.

In 2020, Dylan had already sold the author’s rights to his songs – i.e. the rights to the melodies and lyrics, not the finished recordings – to the world’s largest music group Universal Music for an estimated around $ 300 million. Among Dylan’s greatest successes are songs like “Blowin’ in the Wind”, “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door” or “The Times They Are A-Changin'”. Numerous other artists, such as Taylor Swift, Fleetwood Mac singer Stevie Nicks, Paul Simon and Tina Turner, have also signed rights deals in recent months.
