Muriel Baumeister is open about her former alcohol problem. Today she describes herself as a “sober alcoholic”.

Actress Muriel Baumeister (50) has been open about her former alcohol problem for many years. Four years ago she completed addiction therapy and has been sober ever since. In a new interview with “Apotheken Umschau”, Baumeister talks in detail about her crisis at the time. Her book “Falling down is not a shame, just staying down” was a need for her: “It was important to me to position myself.” Now she is a “sober alcoholic” because the challenge of addiction is lifelong.

For many years, alcohol was a filter between her and unpleasant emotions: “And there are always moments when I think it really doesn’t take much to drink now.” The concern and mindfulness of paying attention to these moments is “incredibly exhausting”. But in these moments she doesn’t drink anything: “Or as Alcoholics Anonymous say: Not today. That’s the answer always and to everything with alcohol.”

Cold turkey in the Berlin Charité

Incidentally, they brought their panic attacks, which were triggered by alcohol consumption, into therapy at the time: “A soul and a body couldn’t cry out for help more clearly.” In 2017, Baumeister went cold turkey to the closed psychiatric ward at the Charité in Berlin. Ten days later, the mother of three was sober – and that to this day.
