Munich: Why the Urban Design Commission exists – Munich

The Urban Design Commission has existed since 1970 to ensure the architectural quality of Munich. The committee meets with five new members this Tuesday. What it does and how it works – an overview.

The call came late last year. And it came as a surprise to Verena Schmidt: “I didn’t even know that I was on the list of suggestions”. A city official was on the phone and asked if she was interested in becoming a member of the City Planning Commission. And yes, the architect, 35 years old and managing director of the Berlin office Teleinternetcafé, wanted to be part of this committee and advise the city on special building projects. “It is a very exciting task because it deals with issues that affect the city and its residents on a daily basis,” says Schmidt. “And I know Munich well, the city is important to me.” Schmidt grew up in Freising and lived in Munich while she was studying architecture at the Technical University (TU). The urban development concept for the development of the creative district on the border between Maxvorstadt and Neuhausen came from her office.
