Munich: What the residency week 2023 has to offer – Munich

There are three anniversaries to celebrate at this year’s Residence Week: 400 years of the awarding of the Electoral dignity to the Bavarian dukes, the 450th birthday of Elector Maximilian I of Bavaria and the completion of the Old Schleißheim Palace, also 400 years ago. And so more than 120 guided tours, numerous hands-on stations and eight concerts at the highest musical level offer plenty of opportunities to immerse yourself in the world of the Wittelsbachs and their companions and to experience the Munich Residence and the Schleißheim Palace complex as a total work of art consisting of architecture, interior design, garden design and music.

For music enthusiasts, the concerts are in a historical ambience – this year the Augsburger Domsingknaben and the ensemble are taking part Les Cornets Noirs the opening, that Stereotypical Baroque ensemble the final program – as highlights anyway, because they give the rare chance to experience Renaissance and Baroque music in rooms such as the Imperial Hall or the Antiquarium and thus in an authentic location. The special tours, in turn, provide insights into life at the beginning of the 17th century; the topics range from electoral reform policies and love of music to magnificent architecture and the table manners of the time.

Celebrate celebrations in the Cuvilliés Theater: You can find out “what a baroque theater could offer” in a guided tour on October 13th at 3:30 p.m.

The program that the Bavarian Palace Administration has put together for children and families this year is particularly extensive: under the motto “Sounding Residence,” instruments can be built from recycled material in the White Hall on October 7th and 8th. “Maximilian I invites you to table” is the name of a family tour in which children learn exciting things about table manners and table decoration and at the end can design a plate themselves (October 7th, 2:30 p.m., October 8th, 10:30 a.m.). The musical tour for families “Listen, who’s making music?” starts on October 8th at 3 p.m. also in the residence. And anyone who has always dreamed of being their own king can at least take a photo of themselves in the selfie box in the throne room of the residence on October 14th. Ideally, after you have made yourself a suitably royal headgear at the hands-on station “Paintings and Garments” in the White Hall.

There is also a lot on offer for children in the Schleißheim Palace complex: on October 15th you can try out “Baroque fun for young and old”. “Fine Society” is the name of the family tour of the state painting collections with a subject workshop at 10:30 a.m. And in the family tour “Of Visible and Invisible Servants” at 1:30 p.m., children can slip into the role of court servants and viennese the stairwell – who knows, maybe the technology can also be used at home.
