In September 2017, the watchmaker’s house in Giesingen was torn down by an excavator. That sparked protests in the city. In all likelihood, it will now be rebuilt.

The listed watchmaker’s house will most likely be rebuilt. The Bavarian Administrative Court declared an order of the city of Munich largely legal – in it the owner was obliged to restore the original condition as far as possible.
The watchmaker’s house in the historic Feldmüller estate in Giesing was demolished in 2017 by a building contractor using an excavator. The city of Munich then asked the owner to rebuild the house. Against this he sued and was initially right before the administrative court. The Administrative Court has now partially overturned this judgment.
Mathias Pfeil, head of the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments, welcomed the outcome: “This ruling strengthens the preservation of monuments throughout the Free State and recognizes the high cultural value that monuments have for our society,” it said in a press release. “The court has now made it very clear that it is not worth destroying monuments.”
