Munich has produced many well-known chefs, but one outshined most of them for a long time: Alfons Schuhbeck. There was hardly a pot on television that he didn’t put his cooking spoon in. This is how he became a well-known ambassador of the Bavarian way of life. He also built an empire at the Platzl, right in the heart of Munich, which made his thirst for recognition visible to the whole world: starred restaurants, bars, cooking schools, spice shops and ice cream shops. Apparently there was nothing that Alfons Schuhbeck couldn’t think of anything tasty to go with.
Since this week, the size of the kitchen has been on a completely different stage. The 73-year-old has to answer for tax evasion before the Munich I district court. He faces imprisonment – like a good friend of his, who was tried eight years ago in the same place for the same allegation: Uli Hoeneß. The former president of FC Bayern seemed lost on the unfamiliar terrain at the time – “as if he had to play water polo instead of football,” as my colleague Annette Ramelsberger writes, who observed the trial that put Hoeneß in prison at the time.
Celebrities in court: This is always an exciting topic.
