Hard to believe, but Charlotte Knobloch turns 90 this weekend. Anyone who sees her at private meetings or at public appearances, as recently during the 77th anniversary of the Süddeutsche Zeitung in the Gärtnerplatztheater, is even more astonished. And all of this after a remarkable life story, because she survived the Nazi era hidden on a farm in Middle Franconia (SZ Plus). Since 1985 she has led the Jewish community in Munich and Upper Bavaria. The fact that there are visible signs of Jewish life in Bavaria on St.-Jakobs-Platz with the synagogue, the community center and the Jewish Museum in the heart of Munich is not least due to their persistence. Even critics from the Jewish community concede that. Now, when people gather this Sunday to Charlotte Knobloch and her life’s work to celebrate, then there will be many congratulations. One already congratulated her: the former Chancellor Angela Merkel wanted to personally greet Knobloch at the SZ celebration in the Gärtnerplatztheater. Merkel dryly acknowledged that Charlotte Knobloch would soon be celebrating her 90th birthday: “I know that!”
