Munich today – news from October 27th, 2021 – Munich

In one year the time will come: then it will be 50 years since the Summer Olympics took place in Munich. The event changed the city. The clearest sign of this is the wonderfully curved roof over the Olympic Stadium, which rises between the equally wonderfully curved hills of the Olympic Park. It is so popular with the people of Munich as a leisure area that it is regarded worldwide as a prime example of how creations for the Olympics can be kept alive for a long time.

When it comes to the green Olympic heritage, Munich is exemplary. It doesn’t look quite as good with the gray rings legacy. The Olympiastadion and the Olympiahalle are two problem children that are increasingly difficult to play on the older they get. The event industry is constantly hungry for new attractions, the technical demands are increasing. The recently lavishly renovated Olympic Hall could now be doomed if an investor is allowed to build a new multi-function arena at the airport as planned, for which the course is to be set this Thursday (SZ Plus).

The city that owns the Olympic site plunges into a dilemma: empty Olympic buildings are dead Olympic buildings. The strict regulations of the monument protection do not allow for much new. How useful are these? Are they even appropriate for sports facilities? In the editorial office we discussed these questions for a long time on Wednesday, and my colleague Heiner Effern brought together much of what was considered in one comment. His conclusion for the Olympic buildings is rather sobering: “There is no sustainable future concept for the entire Olympic site to be seen. An omission that could take bitter revenge after 50 wonderful years.” Do you see it differently? Then write to us! The easiest way is to send an email to [email protected].
