Munich today – news from October 16th, 2022 – Munich

They demand noise protection – and make as much noise as possible themselves. They demand noise protection areas because they think and define differently than usual. They are not fighting for the right to rest, but for a very big goal: the right to affordable housing and subculture. And so they understand noise as a protection against luxury renovation and gentrification, because they assume: where it is noisy, no investor puts up expensive buildings, because their clientele has money and wants to buy peace and quiet. So the “Krachparade” dances through Munich to spit a bit on the returns of the luxury renovators.

Suddenly, the dry, legally influenced rental policy gets a whole new drive. Suddenly, many young people join a rent demo. The rave comes along as a rental and cultural-political music demonstration, an unusual symbiosis for Munich. Rental activists from “Ausspeculated” and mostly young people from the initiative “More Noise for Munich” who want to dance and party without the usual restrictions, and not just in clubs and basements, but outside, on the street.

The rave with thousands of participants goes through the city for six hours on Saturday, with boxes, mixers and disco balls on strange, often self-made vehicles and trailers. They pass places that are known simply because owners, renovators and builders make a lot of money with real estate there, and the residents no longer know how to proceed. The noisemakers know how to proceed: with a rent freeze for six years and with more freedom for alternative culture. Their battle cry is: “Up noise – down rents!”
