Laura Glauber, the singer of the synth-pop band Lauraine, seems nervous a few seconds before the performance. She checks the technology one last time. Then drummer Alexander Petri counts in. In August, more than 40 spotlights illuminate the circular stage in the celebration work, seven cameras are filming the concerts, a 12.5 meter long track is specially rented in order to be able to record the bands from all sides. More than 20 men and women take care of the lighting and sound – also making sure that the young musicians are doing well. Most newcomers don’t get that much attention. Attention that is honored not only by the bands, but also by the fans. Outside, on the computer screens.
Because of the corona pandemic, the “Sound Of Munich Now” festival, which is organized by Feierwerk and the Süddeutsche Zeitung and funded by the City of Munich’s Department of Culture and the Jugendkulturwerk, could only take place digitally last year. But the decision to film the short concerts extensively and to broadcast the videos was more than a stopgap solution. More than 30,000 people watched the videos – that roughly corresponds to the audience for three concerts in the Olympiahalle. And that with newcomer bands. Admittedly, there were definitely not 30,000 different music fans. Still, the number is impressive.
This year too the festival takes place digitally. Five concerts are now published, the interest in the videos remains high. At the beginning the concert by Lauraine ran. She was “incredibly excited”, says Laura Glauber, not only on stage, but also two and a half months later in front of the screen. The performance wasn’t quite perfect, she says self-critically, but it was a great experience. “Thank you for doing that. And for giving 20 bands such a platform.”
