Munich today – News from May 31, 2022 – Munich

When was the last time you were at your recycling island? And how did it look there? Wertstoffinsel actually sounds like a nice place. When you think of an island, you immediately think of the South Seas, beach, relaxation, or as a Bavarian maybe at least the pretty houses and the beautiful gardens on the Fraueninsel in Lake Chiemsee. And in the recyclable material, there is already a literal appreciation. In reality, you won’t find an island, but a few unadorned containers in which you can, at best, throw packaging waste such as glass bottles, plastic and metal. In the worse case, which is unfortunately not uncommon in Munich, someone from the neighborhood has disposed of their bulky waste in front of it or put down bottles because the bins were already full. So who can seriously object to a reorganization of the separation and disposal of packaging?

The waste management company in Munich, a company of the city, now wants to test in a pilot test whether yellow bins or even bins for recyclables could be used instead of recycling bins. Waste other than packaging could also be thrown into these if they are made of the same material. However, changing the disposal system would not be quite as uncomplicated as it sounds. Many trucks would also have to drive through the city, the actual reuse rate of separated waste is not exactly great in Germany. And, unfortunately, it has to be said that we Munich residents don’t exactly belong to the top group of garbage sorters.

The experiment should now show whether it is due to the long distances to the recycling island or not. In an ideal world, this shouldn’t be an obstacle in the effort to conserve raw materials and the environment. Ultimately, it is up to each individual to pat themselves on the back when the organic waste or the packaging ends up in the residual waste. But perhaps a more convenient system of separation can contribute to taking the necessary step forward as a society. Read more about Munich’s plans and the big garbage question: will citizens still be obliged to bring their rubbish or will disposal companies be obliged to collect?
