Munich today – news from May 16th, 2022 – Munich

Three people are sitting on the street in the morning rush hour on Monday, two have tied themselves to the ground with superglue. A peaceful action by climate activists from the group “Last Generation”. But some people who are stuck in traffic react extremely aggressively: press photographers capture scenes in which drivers drag a young man off the road, while another is being followed. One of the activists later said that he had even been threatened with a baton. The three activists, two young men and a woman, are finally taken to the police station after they have received reports of harassment in road traffic. In view of the pictures, however, one wonders: What is going on on the streets of Munich?

The three people wanted to use their means to draw attention to the climate crisis and demand – like many others in Germany – a radical stop to fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal. The Munich City Council and environmentalists are largely in agreement: If a protest remains non-violent, it is legitimate, even if it may not always be legal. Unfortunately, the aggressive mood of some motorists, who become violent because of such a rally, does not fit in with this. Apparently, it is still the case in parts of the car-driving population that people without wheels have no place on the street, after all, that’s what sidewalks are for.

These pictures from Monday morning definitely make you think, no, they are shocking. Apparently, these few motorists do not shy away from violence and vigilantism in order to maintain their supposed right on the road. It is precisely these people who should bear in mind that even without three people sitting down, they might be stuck in a traffic jam a few hundred meters later anyway. If they then also noticed: It’s not the others who are the cause of the traffic jam, but you yourself are part and contributory cause of the traffic jam, a lot would be achieved for all road users, including pedestrians and cyclists.
