There is a moment that actually repeats itself every year – and yet always surprises. It usually comes when the trees are green again and the pollen covers all surfaces with a fine yellow layer. The sun is getting stronger every day, the winter jacket is finally coming back into the closet. And then one day you step outside the door, it’s really warm, and after all the cold and dark winter days, you remember exactly: This is what summer feels like.
The past few days offered perfect conditions for such a summer moment. The temperatures have risen and you can really feel that the people of Munich are now keen to go outside. The smell of grilling rises from the gardens, the parks are getting fuller and fuller. Perhaps the urge to get outside this year is even stronger than ever: now that everyone is hoping the pandemic is over – at least by next winter.
My colleague Franz Kotteder took a closer look at this new Munich freedom. And written about an attitude to life that has now found a comfortable home in the sidewalk cafés. Because this idea, which was born out of the emergency of the pandemic, now ensures a street scene that has become more colourful, more cheerful and also more cosmopolitan.
