Munich today – news from July 8th, 2021 – Munich

When shots are fired in Munich, either idiots with alarm pistols are out there – or something really happened. Everyone probably knows that the city is one of the safest cities in the world. The police even go to the trouble of starting a manhunt for the “robbery of a woolen hat”. No joke. The control yesterday evening in the Englischer Garten could have been typically Munich: A passer-by noticed a “suspicious” person, so plainclothes police arrived. Sometimes the officers meet someone who is simply drunk, sometimes they discover a few grams of drugs.

This time they met a man who they felt threatened by. And that is why they fired several shots. That already happened on Wednesday evening at Oberföhringer Wehr. Because it didn’t rain there for once, many joggers and cyclists (and vice versa) were out and about in the English Garden. You were all rerouted and probably wondered for the rest of the evening what happened there? This cannot be said exactly the day after either.

My colleague Joachim Mölter asked the Munich police and the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office. The latter checks by default after the use of police firearms whether they have been used lawfully. It is very, very rare for police officers to take up arms and actually shoot.

This time they were obviously exposed to a threat to life and limb, as it is called in official German. The suspicious man in the English Garden had drawn a plastic pistol that looked deceptively real. The police responded and pulled the trigger. Multiple times. The man was hit in the upper body and his condition is stable. Now the police investigations are continuing – colleague Mölter is also staying on.

THE DAY IN MUNICH

Much criticism of the “pedestrian zone” variant in the valley During the main line construction site, parking spaces and taxi stands are to be relocated. The residents particularly dislike the urban communication.

The new Sobon rules are daring – and good for Munich The new requirements for housing construction are not without risk – but the reform of “socially just land use” is worthwhile. A comment.

From Hellabrunn to the Austrian Alps Urs and Uwe have exchanged their protected enclosure for the wilderness. For the Munich zoo it is the first release of ibexes since the 1990s.

The concert hall in the Werksviertel is to become higher, brighter, more expensive The budget committee of the state parliament approves further plans for the concert hall in the Werksviertel. This is now to receive a light art facade, be ready by 2030 and cost around 700 million euros.
