Grass snakes are “everywhere in Munich,” says veterinarian Markus Baur from the sanctuary for reptiles and amphibians in Schwabing. Aesculapian snakes and adders also live in the city. And unless you’re suffering from a snake phobia, that’s actually really good news.
But not only snakes, also other reptiles can be seen in Munich much more than before. Baur knows why this is so – and explained to my colleague Konstantin Rek how to behave in the event of a sighting. Baur has just founded the “Munich Urviecher” together with the Academy for Zoo and Wildlife Protection. The project aims to bring the local animals closer to the citizens – especially the children. “We have to get them excited again so that the children don’t grow up afraid of animals,” says Baur.
