Just removing the scenery piece by piece would employ a dozen restorers and cost around ten million euros, says Andreas Gundelwein, the curator responsible.
Now the museum organizers are racking their brains about how to proceed. There is still no money for the restoration, nor a depot to store the parts. And the monument protection makes things even more difficult. They can’t rebuild the mine one-to-one, says Gundelwein. “It’s neither structurally nor for fire safety reasons, and it doesn’t make sense didactically either.”
If it were up to him they would keep the most valuable parts, they would of course create an emotional experience again, but they also want to tell the history of mining. Because it doesn’t end with the Ruhr coal. Today, miners are mining cobalt and lithium for our cell phones and electric cars in catastrophic conditions.
