There are topics that are announced for a long time, after all they are linked to formative historical events. But the anniversary is just around the corner, as these themes unfold a dynamic that is sweeping – and fascinates anew. In the past few months, this has happened to us in the Munich editorial office. This weekend, the city kicks off the big festival commemorating the brighter side of the Olympic Games 50 years ago. There is a lot on offer in the Olympic Park for a week. That’s why we thought about it back in the spring: What can we offer our readers on this occasion?
E-mails were written, ideas collected, conferences convened – and one thing quickly became clear: These games, which began so exuberantly and took such a cruel turn with the attack by Palestinian terrorists on the Israeli team, are still incredibly moving even after half a century .
What were the consequences of the mistakes made by the police at the time? Who were the architects of the idea of staging Munich as a model for a modern Germany? Where did the zeitgeist of that time show itself and where can it perhaps still be found today? And: What became of the stars of the games?
Many of my colleagues have thought about all of this over the past few months, spoken to eyewitnesses and other experts, and rummaged through archives. One of these was created collectionwhich turned out to be much larger than originally thought – and which impressively shows the broad impact these games had: sports, urban planning, politics, music, fashion, the influence of the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich is still evident everywhere.
