Munich today – news from January 9th, 2022 – Munich

This year will be a special one for the Deutsches Museum. If everything goes as planned, the first part of the renovation will be finished in May. For visitors this means: Numerous exhibits that they have had to do without in the past few years are finding their way back from the depot, the Schleissheim aircraft yard or the traffic center back to the Museum Island. The giant model railway will then be technically outdated again, as will the alpine hut from the Tegernsee region, and the Munich residents were able to watch the plane “Tante Ju” when it returned in the summer.

Some things will appear familiar to visitors, but many things will also be new – and some things they will have to do without from May onwards. The popular mine, one of the museum’s attractions, will be dismantled, because then the other part of the ailing building will be renovated. And this work will have to be carried out more cheaply than the previous one.

The first section cost 450 million euros, which is already 50 million more than was once discussed for the entire renovation. In the meantime there is talk of 750 million euros, and it will stay that way, says the commercial director of the Deutsches Museum, Henrik Häcker, in an interview with SZ: “If necessary, you have to opt for a cheaper option.”

In an interview with my colleague Martina Scherf, Häcker also explains how great the facility’s losses are due to the corona pandemic and what plans and projects there are beyond renovation (SZ Plus).

THE DAY IN MUNICH

Parking in Munich should become drastically more expensive The green-red majority of the town hall wants to almost double the fees. Businesspeople should sometimes pay five times more for their parking permits than before – but there are exceptions.

Online declaration against corona protests The association “Munich is colorful” wants to create a counterbalance to the “walks” and warns against conspiracy theorists. What is in the “Munich Declaration” and where you can sign it.

Why carnival is suddenly like resistance The Narrhalla enthrones her prince couples – and suddenly Mardi Gras no longer looks like a silly and elongated Oktoberfest. It’s like protesting against a virus that stole so much joy from children.

Bickering instead of brew Broken windows, orphaned construction site: Beer has stopped flowing in the Union brew for a long time. A bitter legal dispute has broken out over the large traditional restaurant on Einsteinstrasse.

“What a confidence in our work” Readers donate 6.2 million euros for the “Advent calendar for good works of the Süddeutsche Zeitung”.
