Munich today – News from January 20th, 2022 – Munich

The other day I saw a few episodes of Helmut Dietl’s grandiose series “Kir Royal”, which is still frighteningly topical. In one of them, the manufacturer Heinrich Haffenloher, alias Mario Adorf, threatens the tabloid journalist Baby Schimmerlos (Franz Xaver Kroetz) with the wonderfully drastic sentence: “I’ll shit you with my money!” That’s what I had to think about when I held the manuscript of my colleague Leo Kilz in my hands, who spent weeks researching in the Munich suburb of Feldkirchen.

“It’s a bit like a bird flying in from Spain and shitting every few meters from the sky,” says one of my colleague’s interviewees in the report. With the drastic comparison, it alludes to a man from Munich who would also fit well in a Dietl series: the former society restaurateur Michael Schamberger. After more or less successful business deals with Wiesn host Christian Schottenhamel and delicatessen entrepreneur Michael Käfer and, above all, a few bankruptcies, he disappeared from the scene for several years. But he has recently returned from his exile on Mallorca and is buying up properties in Feldkirchen, where he grew up as a boy.

What he intends to do with it triggers local speculation and rumours. My colleague Leo Kilz got to the bottom of this. What he has researched is a story of personal relationships and political ties that lead not only to illustrious, but also to right-wing circles (SZ Plus).

THE DAY IN MUNICH

City withdraws from two pre-emption rights The houses at Westendstrasse 5 and Georgenschwaigstrasse 26 were to become public property. But a judgment by the Federal Administrative Court thwarted this plan. What that means for other cases and the affected tenants (SZ Plus).

Munich must allow BDS events The city refused to provide space for the anti-Israel campaign. According to the Federal Administrative Court, this violates freedom of expression. Mayor Reiter speaks of a “setback for democratic urban society”.

Lindwurmstraße should be closed to cars During the three-month blockage of the U3/U6, Lindwurmstraße should only be available to cyclists, taxis and buses, the district committee demands. The Greens see it as an “interesting attempt at traffic”, the CSU speaks of a “stupid idea”.

890 trees for reunification? According to the building department, that would be the price to make the Mittlerer Ring disappear in a tunnel under the Englischer Garten. But the initiators contradict the calculations.

How Munich will deal with corona protests in the future Legal back and forth regularly occurs before the demos. General decrees are lifted at the last minute and then reinstated. Now the city has a legal basis.
