Munich today – news from December 16th, 2022 – Munich

One of the days of this year that I remember the most so far is a Saturday in June. It was a day that started at 5am – I had to catch a train – and ended at 5am the next day on the Olyberg. And in between we swam in the lake, grilled, toasted with secco, danced in the club and watched the next sunrise. It wasn’t a holiday, a birthday or anything like that. But it was a day to celebrate. In the past you might have said go out.

Clubs and bars belong to this city like theatres, museums and cinemas. For many people my age – for students, trainees, job starters – they are indispensable. Some clubs want to offer a sophisticated program, others are there so that the guests can live it up – but here, too, the high inflation and the energy crisis with all their consequences are noticeable. Admission prices are rising, drinks are becoming more expensive – so drastically that a long evening with friends is denied to many students and trainees.

My co-authors Lisa Miethke, Veronika Tièschky and I asked young Munich residents whether and how they had changed their celebration behavior in the face of inflation. Do you still go out – or do you forego an evening in clubs and bars? And where do you save to be able to dance and drink the night away? You can read the young adults’ answers to these questions here. One thing should be said in advance: wine lovers shouldn’t agree with all methods of saving.
