The everyday life of many families is precisely planned – who works on which day and until when, who brings the children to daycare, who picks them up. If something goes unplanned – the child or parent gets sick, the daycare is closed, an appointment at the wrong time – it can upset a lot. The Huber family, whom we call that because they don’t want to read their real name in the newspaper, faced a completely different problem: for months, the parents didn’t know whether they would be able to take their three-year-old daughter to a daycare center starting in September.
Because when they were allocated places via the daycare finder, they went away empty-handed for months, their older daughter’s kindergarten had no space for the little one due to renovation work and the facility that the girl is currently attending only looks after children up to the age of three. Simone Huber asked herself whether you really need luck to get a daycare place in Munich.
She had already warned her employer, says Simone Huber. That she may have to take unpaid leave for an extended period of time. That it could even be that she has to quit her job because her daughter cannot get a kindergarten place. For such cases, there is a day-care center parent counseling service in Munich. The employees help families to find a place for their child. Last year they had more than 40,000 counseling contacts. Claudia Janke set up the Munich counseling center in 2013, she says: “Ultimately everyone will be taken care of” (SZ Plus).
