Munich: The new head of the natural science collections – Munich

The State Natural Science Collections in Bavaria include precious stones, the botanical garden and a digital gene archive of native species. But the specialty of the new general director Joris Peters are animal bones. What can he read from them?

A cow from medieval Munich – such a find delighted Joris Peters. Some time ago, the completely preserved skeleton of a very small cow came to light in the excavation pit at Marienhof for the second main line of the S-Bahn. The animal had been disposed of in a well, why is not yet clear. In any case, the skeleton remained intact. “Fantastic,” says Peters, still as happy as a little boy. Bones are his specialty. He elicits exciting stories from them. And sometimes they even rewrite history.
