Munich: The “Drag Mimosas Brunch” in Café Regenbogen – Munich

To anticipate one thing: The “Drag Mimosas Brunch” is no ordinary Sunday brunch. Rather, breakfast becomes a minor matter at the travesty show in Café Regenbogen. Of course you will also be spoiled with culinary delights, but above all you will be well entertained and you are guaranteed to leave the restaurant happily after just under three hours. And yes, possibly a little bit spiked.

For two years now, the trio of Dean Deville, Janisha Jones and Pasta Parisa has been inviting people to the city’s “most fabulous queer breakfast” once a month, and they really don’t promise too much. To songs like “I’ll never love again” by Lady Gaga, “I love Rock’n’Roll” by Britney Spears or “I wanna dance with somebody” by Withney Houston, the three perfectly made-up artists slip into new roles and break up incidentally, it shows common role models – with a few dirty jokes, lots of charm and even more sex appeal.

But how do you actually get the mix of drag show and Sunday brunch? Adam Tolnay-Knefely, who organizes the shows in the café of the Münchner Aids-Hilfe, already knew the concept from cities like Vienna and Berlin and thought it was time for Munich residents to enjoy this somewhat different brunch experience come. Above all, however, it is about “breaking down prejudices”. This is another reason why non-queer people are expressly welcome. “We are an open house,” says Tolnay-Knefely.

What is there and what does it cost?

The all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet including welcome prosecco and a two-hour show costs 29 euros per person. At the buffet, the kitchen team relies on popular classics: there are muesli and yoghurt, fruit salad, croissants, bread rolls, pretzels with obazda, scrambled eggs with bacon, a rich ham and cheese platter, mini muffins and chocolate mousse and a few other delicacies. You can fill your stomach up from 10 a.m. and that is also recommended. Because from 11 a.m., when the show starts, you really have better things to do.

Drinks cost extra, apart from the welcome prosecco. Latte art and exotic, fruity smoothies are not to be expected at Café Regenbogen. The cappuccino only costs a fair 2.80 euros.

A bottle of Prosecco for the round is served for 14.50 euros. Alternatively, the Prosecco is also available mixed by the glass: a glass of Mimosa, i.e. Prosecco with orange juice, costs 5.50 euros as does a glass of an Aperol Spritz (0.4 liter each), a glass of Prosecco pure 2.60 euros (0, 1 liter).

The money wouldn’t be worth it just for breakfast. But together with the show, which is a little different every time, you get a really unforgettable morning for comparatively little money. And best of all: by buying a ticket you support the important work of the Munich Aids Aid.

The restaurant, which is quite simply furnished, was founded in 1987 as a meeting place for people with HIV and their relatives. Meanwhile, the Rainbow Café is an aid project for the long-term unemployed, with and without HIV infection, to enable them to return to work: They cook and take care of the service.

Who do you meet there?

You quickly notice: Many in the audience are not there for the first time. This creates an almost intimate atmosphere, in which a newcomer does not feel strange, but always warmly welcomed. It doesn’t matter whether queer or straight, man, woman, diverse, young or old. There is only one thing you should know: the tickets sell out quickly, so getting a ticket early is worth it. For example, for the last brunch this year, which is expected to take place on Sunday, December 12th.

Attention: It can happen that a guest is involved in the show.

By the way: Because the three drag queens perform with full physical effort and do not spare their audience, it can happen that you are involved in the show or that earrings and glued-on fingernails fly around your ears. So if you are rather shy, it might be better not to sit in the front row the first time.

Cafe rainbow, Lindwurmstraße 71, 80337 Munich, ticket reservations possible at: 089/54333102 or [email protected], admission from 10 a.m., the show starts at 11 a.m.
