Munich: Thalkirchner Straße railway underpass will be closed to car traffic – Munich

The announcement came at short notice this Wednesday: From next Monday, April 8th, until May 3rd, a busy connection between Sendling and the Isarvorstadt will be completely closed for a month. Due to construction work, the passage through the railway underpass on Thalkirchner Straße between Lagerhausstraße and Reifenstuelstraße will be closed. After that, the underpass will only be accessible to car traffic to the north, i.e. towards Kapuzinerstrasse, until February 2025.

In all construction phases, the crossing of the railway tracks remains passable for cyclists and pedestrians. However, the cycle path and sidewalk will be merged and each narrowed down.

During the first construction phase, bus line 62 of the Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft will be rerouted in both directions via Tumblingerstraße and Zenettistraße. The Ehrengutstrasse and Lagerhausstrasse stops are no longer available. Line 62 then continues to run in the direction of Rotkreuzplatz on the diversion route, and in the direction of Ostbahnhof it then runs again on the regular route.

The reason for the closure: Between the house numbers Thalkirchner Straße 112 and 114, where the “Zur Gruam” pub is located, a passenger platform is being built for the future car train system at the old Südbahnhof. The existing loading terminal for cars at Ostbahnhof will be demolished because a new S-Bahn stop for the second main line will be built there.

Ramps must be built for the entrances and exits from the railway site to Thalkirchner Straße. The access for cars to the loading terminal is in the area of Thalkirchner Straße 122/corner of Oberländerstraße.

The underpass on Tumblingerstrasse is also affected by the work on the new loading terminal. During the construction period, the western footpath and cycle path will be closed; a construction site set-up area is planned there. Cyclists and pedestrians are guided along a specially widened path on the eastern side of the tunnel.

The axis is an important connection between Sendling and the Isarvorstadt.

According to the building permit, car traffic should be redirected via Lagerhausstrasse and Tumblingerstrasse or vice versa. The Isartalstrasse and Kapuzinerstrasse would offer a more extensive bypass. But there could also be increased sneak traffic on Ehrengutstrasse and Dreimühlenstrasse and through the underpass there.

The mobility department justifies the fact that the residents were informed less than a week before construction work began by saying that “votes” were still being made “until the very end.”

As with other Deutsche Bahn projects, it is apparently not 100% certain whether the car train terminal can actually go into operation as planned in mid-2025: “As with any construction site, there may be unexpected delays or changes to the schedule “, says the city.

After all, according to the building permit, it is impossible for there to be simultaneous full closures on Thalkirchner Strasse and Lindwurmstrasse, where the railway bridge will be rebuilt and the roadway lowered by 2028.
