Munich: SZ readers donate almost one million euros for refugees – Munich

By Thursday, SZ readers had already donated almost one million euros to their aid organization, the “Advent calendar for good deeds Süddeutsche Zeitung“to support people from Ukraine who fled to Munich and the region to escape from Putin’s war of aggression. “An incredible result,” says Martina Linke, who works on the Advent calendar, and the phone doesn’t stop ringing. “Our readers’ sympathy for fate of the Ukraine refugees is impressive.” First aid has already been paid out. For example, the workers’ welfare service, which has taken on the care and advice for the around 250 refugees in the lightweight construction hall on Neuherbergstraße, was able to procure hygiene articles, clothing and blankets.

“I read the appeal for donations this morning in the SZ newsletter and because of the serious donation address and the current great need of the Ukraine refugees, I was immediately ready to transfer a donation to their aid organization Adventskalender for good works,” e-mailed a subscriber from the Vulkaneifel and sent 5000 euros.

A mother suffering from cancer, who fled Kharkiv with her two small children and her mother-in-law, found great sympathy. Although Anastasiia Z. is in the middle of chemotherapy, her husband had to stay behind and has since been drafted into the military. A group of helpers takes care of them, thanks to the donations, clothes, household equipment and toys can be purchased.

SZ Advent calendar

The Süddeutsche Zeitung’s “Advent Calendar for Good Works” offers support to people who are in need – these days especially those who are fleeing the war in Ukraine. It is mostly women and children who leave their homes, but also old people. They were often unable to take even the bare essentials with them when they fled. There is a lack of hygiene articles, but also of clothing. It will take a while before the refugees who register receive state support. The SZ Advent calendar helps where it is most needed, for example with the procurement of blankets and hot water bottles and provides shopping vouchers for the first everyday needs, which are given out in the emergency shelters. Sick and old refugees receive additional support, such as medical aids, through individual case assistance. There is also support for the necessary school equipment for children.
