Munich: State bishop opens first diaconal church in Bavaria – Munich

The Evangelical-Lutheran Gospel Church in Hasenbergl was reopened on Palm Sunday after two years of renovation as the first Bavarian diaconal church. The listed church was transformed into a new church center in the course of a necessary renovation. According to the builders, it is cooperating with the Hasenbergl Diakonie in a way that is unique in Bavaria.

As a “diaconal church” it should offer plenty of space for social interaction – for example for meeting places for community members, residents and employees. The residents of Hasenbergl have “changed fundamentally” towards more diversity, recalled the Bavarian Bishop Heinrich Bedford-Strohm in his sermon at the festival service on Sunday.

The church service room was reduced in size, but the diakonia was given more space in the adjoining parish hall. The work there is still ongoing. The total conversion costs are 6.5 million euros.
