Munich: S-Bahn trunk line paralyzed by a balloon – Munich

A short circuit in an overhead line in the S-Bahn tunnel between Marienplatz and Stachus paralyzed the main route for more than two and a half hours early Monday morning. According to the federal police, the platform at Marienplatz had to be cleared at short notice. However, there was no danger to travelers.

The cause of the deflagration was apparently a metal-coated balloon, as a railway spokesman said. Around 5.15 a.m., smoke came out, which is why the main route had to be closed for safety reasons. Technicians checked the overhead line for existing damage. After that, test drives were carried out before the route could be released again at around half past seven. Because of the smoke development, there was initially incorrect talk of a fire brigade operation.

Due to the closure, there were significant delays and cancellations of the S-Bahn in the morning, which significantly affected commuter traffic. S-Bahn traffic only returned to normal in the morning.
