Munich: S-Bahn trunk line blocked for ten days due to construction work – Munich

This August, passengers on the Munich S-Bahn will have to adjust to severe restrictions. From Friday evening, August 4th to Thursday, August 10th, there will be no S-Bahn trains between Ostbahnhof and Hackerbrücke from 10:30 p.m. until the start of operations the following day. The trains start and end early and rail replacement services are in use.

On s-bahn-muenchen.de/baustellen all details can be found. All changes are also included in the timetable information. If you have any questions, the Munich S-Bahn customer service is available daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on 089/55892665.

From Friday evening, August 11 (10:30 p.m.) until Monday morning, August 21 (4:40 a.m.), the main line between Pasing and Ostbahnhof will be completely closed to S-Bahn traffic. The reason for this is extensive construction work.

A completely renovated barrier-free train station is currently being built in Laim. In the future, the first and second main routes will meet here – it should then be possible to change trains on the same platform. As the first part of the new station, a new track 1 including a newly built platform will go into operation in August. For commissioning, Deutsche Bahn (DB) has to link the new track to the existing main line in the upcoming main line closure, after which acceptance tests are carried out in the control and safety technology. At the very end, the new track is tested during test runs.

At the same time, DB continues to work on the maintenance of the existing network. The infrastructure on Europe’s busiest railway line is heavily used with more than 1000 daily S-Bahn journeys. Three points at the Ostbahnhof will therefore be renewed, and four points at the Isartor will be partially renewed. According to the DB, the reliability of the neuralgic switches is of great importance for punctual S-Bahn operations. Due to the cramped conditions in the tunnel, the renewal, including the necessary logistics and ventilation of the construction site, is more complex and takes longer than on the surface. In addition, DB bundles other repair work: Among other things, contact wires on overhead lines are replaced, signaling technology is renewed or construction joints are sealed.

An overview of the lines that are still running:

  • The S1 only runs from/to the main station. The S-Bahn trains run between Moosach and the main train station without stopping. Some trains start/end in Feldmoching (U2).
  • The S2 West only runs every half hour and from Obermenzing without stopping to Heimeranplatz (U5). There is a shuttle service between Altomünster and Dachau at the regular times. The S2 East only runs between Erding and Ostbahnhof or Leuchtenbergring. On weekdays, S2 trains continue from Ostbahnhof as S7 to Kreuzstraße.
  • The S4 West runs from Pasing without stopping to the main station. The S4 East completely omitted on the weekends and on August 15th. On the other days, the trains start/end at Ostbahnhof and become the S3 to Holzkirchen.
  • The S7 not applicable between Hackerbrücke and Giesing/Perlach. On August 14th and 16th to 18th the S7 between Hackerbrücke and Ostbahnhof will be cancelled.
  • The S8 not applicable between Pasing and Hauptbahnhof. Between Ostbahnhof and Hauptbahnhof (platforms 5-10) the trains run non-stop via the Südring. In addition, there is no stop at the Leuchtenbergring.

Due to signal box work there is night 14./15. August additional rail replacement service on the lines S4, S6, S8 between Pasing and Geltendorf/Tutzing/Herrsching.

Between pasing and Central Station the S-Bahn offers a rail replacement service (SEV) every ten minutes. Information and maps of the SEV stops are available on the S-Bahn website. Between Central Station and Ostbahnhof can passengers die U5 to use. This runs every five minutes during the day.

In addition to the rail replacement service and the U5, there are other alternatives available for bypassing:

  • The regional transport can be used between Pasing and Hauptbahnhof and between Ostbahnhof and Hauptbahnhof.
  • The tram 19 is also condensed to a ten-minute cycle in the evening hours.
  • Subway connections with the U2 in Feldmoching (S1), Giesing (S3/S7) and Trudering (S4/S6), with the U3 in Moosach (S1), with the U5 at Heimeranplatz (S2) and in Neuperlach (S7) as well as with the U6 at the Harras (S7).
