There are places in Munich where you like to linger, because oh, they are so beautiful. And there is Max-Joseph-Platz. Actually central, actually big, actually ideal for seeing and being seen in front of the State Opera. But actually ugly. Still.
Because Munich’s second mayor Katrin habenschaden (Greens) is presenting where everything looks a little better, how Max-Joseph-Platz could be pimped up. On Instagram, she shows designs from the building department (“I like it a lot”) and is optimistic: “We want to get down to business in the city council as early as December.”
Until these plans are actually implemented and Max-Joseph-Platz is transformed from the “stone desert that is difficult to walk on, which heats up a lot in summer and is not very inviting” to a “green oasis with opportunities to sit and stroll between shrubs and flowering meadows” (Habenschaden). , users can leave a “like” there.
Who would want to lower the analogue or virtual thumb when at least the illustrations promise more green and shade, so that one can imagine a picnic before going to the opera or while shopping.
At the moment, little invites you to stay longer than necessary – even if it’s not raining.
Even Santa Clauses quickly flee the empty wasteland with only a few attractive pavements left.
After a redesign, the square itself could become a destination – and also a place for cultural events, instead of just being the access road and sidewalk to the opera. Possible The city shows variants for this on its portal.
And what will become of the previously dominant component of the square, a symbol of outdated urban planning, so to speak? The entrance to the opera’s underground car park will remain, but it will be shrunk from being opulent to being inconspicuous; the driveway will also be relocated.
If the city council likes the designs just as much as Katrin Habenschaden, the people of Munich will get another place where they, oh, would like to stay longer.
